James Lewis Smith, a beloved resident of Vermilion, passed away peacefully at Mercy New Life Hospice on Friday, December 22, 2023. He was 91 years old.
Born on September 3, 1932, in Vermilion, James remained a dedicated resident of his hometown throughout his life. He served with honor in the US Navy aboard the USS Coral Sea. He was a valued machinist at Bettcher Industries.
James was deeply involved in his community, serving as a former commander of VFW Post #7576 and as a member of AMVETS Post #22 and the American Legion Post #397. He found joy in exploring flea markets and treasured moments spent with his cherished family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Joyce Smith of Vermilion, OH, and their children: Scott (Janice) Smith, Lisa (Kenneth) Landy, and Ray Smith. James also leaves behind his grandchildren - Austin, Brock, Shawn, and Jason - as well as great-grandchildren - Easton, Dallas, Lacey, and Colten. His brothers, Douglas (Rocellia "Sis") Smith and Jon (Pat) Smith, also mourn his passing.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Sterling and Mary (nee French) Smith.
A graveside service to honor his life will be held on Friday, December 29, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at Maple Grove Cemetery in Vermilion.
