James Snell

September 18, 1926 — June 30, 2020

James (Jim) Snell, 93, of Vermilion, died Tuesday, June 30, 2020 after a short illness. He was born at home on September 18, 1926 to Alva and Nina (nee Driver) Snell, and lived in Vermilion all of his life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia"Ginny" Snell in 2011; his parents, his brother Charles of Vermilion and his sister Ruth Normando of Dayton. Jim was a veteran of the US Navy serving in the South Pacific during WWII. He was a commercial fisherman on Lake Erie, as co-owner of Snell Fish Co. with his parents and brother. Later, he worked for Sibley Construction, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Vermilion United Church of Christ Congregational and a life member of American Legion Post #397. Jim was an avid bowler, rolling a perfect game in 2008 at age 81. He also enjoyed playing golf, and was an ardent fan of the Indians, Browns and Buckeyes. He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie (Steve) Rose of Columbus; sons, James Snell, Jr. of Vermilion and Daniel (Carol) Snell of Vermilion; grandchildren, James (Teri) Snell III of Sandusky, Miranda (Phil) Gammella of Brunswick, Craig Snell of Cleveland, and Lindsey Rose (Mike Toscano) of New York; and his great-granddaughter, Katie Snell. Graveside services will be held Friday, July 3, 2020 at 3:00 pm at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion where the Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military honors.
