Janet Elaine Fisher (née Carte), 82, of Vermilion, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, May 8, 2026, following a brief illness.
Born on September 27, 1943, Janet spent her childhood in Dille, West Virginia, before moving to Vermilion at the age of 19, where she built a loving home with her husband and remained a cherished member of the community for the rest of her life.
Janet dedicated 25 years of service to Vermilion Schools in food service, retiring in 1998. She was known for the kindness she shared with generations of students and staff.
She found joy in life’s simple pleasures — playing the slots and attending mega nights, sewing and quilting beautiful handmade creations for family and friends, completing word searches, and cooking. Her love for Christmas was unending, from her display of villages to her collection of Christmas sweatshirts. Her favorite read, “Get Out Of My Way, I’m Christmas Shopping.” She especially loved dogs, particularly long-haired dachshunds.
Above all else, Janet treasured time spent with her family, who were the center of her life and her greatest source of pride.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Teresa (Drew) Kreger; granddaughters, Jenna (Jacob) Palermo and Jessica Kreger; great-grandson, Thomas Beckett III; great-granddaughter Madelyn Palermo; and her sister, Shelba Rogers.
Janet was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 53 years, Gary “Carl” Fisher; her daughter, Angela Fisher; her parents, Lorenza Rush and Velmer Virginia (née Frame) Carte; and her siblings, Delbert “Buzz” Carte, Dana Carte, Dale Carte, and Martha Dancy.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Riddle Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Jim Cooper will officiate. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Friendship Animal Protective League of Lorain County, 8303 Murray Ridge Road, Elyria, OH 44035.
