Janie Smith (nee Mahaffey), 89, of Avon Lake, died Thursday, November 11, 2010 after a lengthy illness. Born December 3, 1920 in Memphis TN, she lived in Vermilion from 1958-2005 and then with her daughter in Avon Lake. Janie graduated from Whitehaven High School, Memphis, TN and worked as a dental assistant for 18 years in Memphis then for Dr. Mazorow in Lorain for 14 years. She was a member of the United Church of Christ, Vermilion and enjoyed spending time with family, neighbors, and church and beauty shop friends. She enjoyed taking care of her home, decorating, sewing, dancing, crossword puzzles and cooking. She loved Vermilion. Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Caprara, Avon Lake; daughter-in- law, Barbara Smith, Amherst; grandchildren, Amy Caprara and Angie Caprara and her husband Tom Krejci of Avon Lake, Jeffrey Smith, FL, Dustin (Kelly) Smith, Lorain, Sean Smith, Amherst; step grandchildren, Jim (Jackie) Caprara, FL, Gary (Carol) Caprara, Fisherville, KT, Tony (Sue) Caprara, Norwalk, Kris Bickerstaff, Norwalk and Tom Brezina, Lorain, and many great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Janie Terrell (nee Rowland) Mahaffey; her husband, William Thomas Smith Feb., 1993 and her son, William Thomas Smith, Jr. Oct. 2004. Friends may call Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010 at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion from 2-5 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 15, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. The Revered Louis Bertoni will officiate. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion. The family suggests memorial contributions to the United Church of Christ Congregational, P.O.
