Jay Samons

Jay Samons, 97, of Vermilion, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, November 21, 2022 at Mercy New Life Hospice after a lengthy illness.

He was born May 3, 1925 in Dana , KY and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 61 years moving from Kentucky.

Jay was a veteran of the US Army serving as a Medic during World War II.

He worked for Ford Motor Co., Lorain for 29 years, retiring in 1986.

Jay was a member of Little Edna Old Regular Baptist Church and the UAW #425.  He enjoyed gardening, traveling, and his pets.  He was strong in his faith and enjoyed worshiping at his church and his son's church, North Lake Missionary Baptist Church.  He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 77 years, Beulah (nee Smiley) Samons; daughters, Judy (the late Virgil "Bud") Lafferty of Wakeman, Janet (Ed) Young of Berlin Hts, Jill (Terry) Haston of Vermilion, and Norma (Ron) Emery of Vermilion; son, Jayson (Sharon) Samons of Norwalk; grandchildren: Jay, Shelly, Tammy, Derek, Angela, Terry Jr., Jennifer, Jeffrey, and Missy; many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and his sister, Denna Sielke of PA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Solomon "Sol" and Della (nee Akers) Samons; brother, Edgar Samons; sisters, Verna Mae Conn, Carlie Gibson, Lois Boyd, Mavis Marston, and Jean Halfhill; and his grandson, Wayde Lafferety.

The family will receive friends on Monday, Nov. 28, 2022 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio.  Funeral services will be Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the North Lake Missionary Baptist Church, 323 N. Lake Street, South Amherst, OH 44001. Pastors Steve Slone, Larry Newsome, and Dennis Elkins will co-officiate. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion where Military Honors will be conducted.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Little Edna Old Regular Baptist Church, 5160 Bond Ave., Sheffield Twp..
