Jean Barton, 70, of Vermilion and formerly of Port Gamble, WA, died Monday, January 14, 2019 at her sister's home after a brief illness. She was born August 29, 1948 in Wichita, KS and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 4 months moving from Port Gamble WA where she had lived for the past 35 years. Jean worked for the Federal Government as a Housing Officer for the Coast Guard and Homeland Security retiring after 50 years. She enjoyed knitting, being in nature, and watching the birds and squirrels in the woods behind her house. She treasured the dogs and cats that were her companions over the years. She is survived by her sister, Diana (Tony) Szambecki of Vermilion; nephew, Lee (Kathryn) Szambecki of Bay Village; niece, Shea (David) Loper of Vermilion; and great nieces and nephews, Liam, Irene, and Drew. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Teresa (nee Faber) Barton and her nephew, Aaron Szambecki. A funeral mass will be Monday, Jan. 21, 2019 at 10:30 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange St., Vermilion, OH 44089. Rev. Ron Brickner will officiate. Private interment will take place at Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion. The family suggests memorial contributions to Friendship Animal Protective League, 8303 Murray Ridge Road, Elyria, OH 44035.
