Joan Charles

Joan Charles (nee Walker), 75, of Vermilion, died Monday, January 14, 2019 at Kingston of Vermilion after a lengthy illness. She was born April 7, 1943 in Oberlin and had been a Vermilion resident for 36 years, also living in Florida, Oberlin, and Lorain. Joan graduated from Oberlin High School and continued her education at Kent State University. She received her teaching degree from Ashland University and taught English for Elementary and Middle School students in Columbus, OH and Jacksonville FL. She had also been a substitute teacher for Vermilion and Amherst Schools. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cooking, baking, and boating with her children and husband, Jim. She is survived by her daughter, Heather MacKellar of Vermilion; granddaughters, Morgan and Taylor Trbovich; step daughter, Tamera Hallett of Bloomington, IN and Jennifer Charles of Melbourne, FL; step son, J.C. Charles of Strongsville; and her sister, Brenda (Bob) Novak of Westfield Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alvah and Betty (nee Scott) Walker; first husband, Robert MacKeller; and her second husband, James "Jim" Charles. Friends may call Friday, Jan. 18, 2019 from 4:00 pm until the time of the funeral service at 6:00 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, OH 44089.
