Joan Arlett Fischer (nee Nickley), 87, of Vermilion, died Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at Elmcroft of Lorain after a lengthy illness. She was born October 20, 1929 in Vermilion where she had been a life long resident. Joan worked as a LPN for Amherst Hospital before entering into private practice working for Dr. Snell in Amherst. She finished her working career with Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky. She had been a member of the Vermilion Evangelical and Reformed Church and was a 50 year member of the Madeleine Chapter #204 Order of the Eastern Stars. She enjoyed flower gardening, traveling, cooking, sewing, spending time with her dogs, and especially enjoyed her grandchildren. Joan is survived by her sons, John (Char) Fischer of Amherst, Wayne (Susan) Fischer of Vermilion, Dean (Joyce) Fischer of Vermilion, and Bart (Jenny) Fischer of Amherst; daughter, Dawn (Craig Lake) Fischer of Aberdeen, MD; 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; and brother, Gene (Joyce) Nickley of Vermilion. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Florence (nee Barras) Nickley, granddaughter, Alison Clark, sisters, Olga "Sue" Otto, Florence "Mickey" Nickley; Lorraine "Mickey" Eberle, Odessa Kawasaki, and Gertrude Allen; and brothers, Alfred, George, Archie, and Peter "Bud" Nickley. The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 12, 2016 from 4:00 pm until the time of a memorial service at 6:00 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street Vermilion, Ohio.
