John R. Cherney, 81, of Vermilion, died Tuesday, January 29, 2019 after a lengthy illness. He was born June 12, 1937 in Lorain and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 30 years moving from Amherst. John graduated from Lorain High School in 1955 and enlisted in the Army in 1956. He was stationed in Ansbach Germany with the 74th Field Artillery Battalion during the Cold War. John received his Engineering Degree from American Technical Institutes, Akron in 1962. He worked as an engineer for Electrochemical Products, New Berlin, Wisconsin retiring in 2003. He was a member of AMVETS Post #22, Vermilion. John enjoyed boating, water skiing, woodworking, and planning fly in fishing vacations to remote parts of Canada. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 30 years, Marilyn (Pajak) Cherney of Vermilion; son, Ken Cherney of Dayton; and his sisters, Eva Cox of Westlake and Maryellen Baily of Lorain. He was preceded in death by his father, Mike Cherney and his mother, Helen (nee Rilko) Cox. Military Honors will be presented by the Vermilion Veterans Council on Monday, Feb. 4, 2019 at 12:30 pm at Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion.
