John E. Kovalan

October 21, 1954 — May 28, 2025

John E. Kovalan, 70, of Vermilion, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at University Hospitals of Cleveland following complications from surgery.

Born October 21, 1954, in Youngstown, Ohio, John made Vermilion his home for the past 47 years after relocating from Youngstown to continue his career with U.S. Steel in Lorain. He later transitioned to working as a car hauler with E&L Transport and Cassen Transport, dedicating over 30 years to the road before retiring in 2016.

John was a passionate marksman and a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association. Competitive shooting was not just a hobby-it was a way of life. Whether at the range or at competitions, he found great joy, discipline, and camaraderie in the sport. His sharp aim and steady hand were matched by his enthusiasm for encouraging others who shared his love for firearms and marksmanship. He also enjoyed woodworking, often crafting pieces with the same precision and focus that marked his time behind the trigger.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Debra (née Kredel) Kovalan; his children, Lisa (Paul) Gardinier and Jennifer Dudek, both of Vermilion, and John Kovalan Jr. of Chicago, IL; his beloved grandchildren, Courtney Kovalan, Jordan (Kegan) Bartlome, and Jaden Dudek; great-grandson, Chase Bartlome; his sisters, Patricia (Scott Shope) Kovalan of Charlotte, NC, Jane Kovalan and Nancy Iovenette of Youngstown, OH, Mary (Joe) Schesler of Canfield, OH, Joanne Antigua of Sacramento, CA; his brother, Robert (Carla) Kovalan of Youngstown, OH, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Lena (née Nenadich) Kovalan.

Private family services will be held.

In honor of John's deep respect for service and freedom, memorial contributions may be made to any veterans organization of the donor's choice.
