John V. Magnus

John V. Magnus, age 95, of Lorain, died Thursday, February 13, 2014 at New Life Hospice Center after a short illness. John was born August 10, 1918 in Neffs, OH, and attended school there. Before entering the Unites States Army, John worked as a hardware store clerk, house painter, and bus driver. He had been a Lorain resident for the past 70 years. He was a W.W. II veteran of the United States Army entering in March of 1941. He served in the 5th Army and saw action in North Africa, and Italy. Besides John being involved in the Tunisian Campaign and the Italian Campaign, John was the driver for King George the VI, and General Mark Clark while the King was touring North Africa. He achieved the rank of Corporal and was awarded the EAME Campaign Ribbon, American Defense Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, and two Bronze Stars. When discharged from the Army, John met and married Angeline (nee Mancini) in July of 1946. They kept a home for many years on the West side of Lorain. John worked his entire working career in automotive sales in Lorain, Elyria, and Cleveland. He was an auto parts salesman in the Cleveland area for several years, and then worked for, and retired from J.R. Dall Ford Dealership in Elyria as a parts manager. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Lorain and the Knights of Columbus Council # 637. John has had many hobbies throughout the years which included golf and reading. He also enjoyed traveling the country collecting antiques with his wife Angie. He is survived by his sister Genevieve Crlenjak of Amherst, nieces and nephews Mary, John, and James Crlenjak, Robert Raymer, and Emily Niciforos. He was preceded in death by his wife Angeline in 2002, parents Anton and Helen (nee Kuczynski) Magnuszewski, brothers Stanley Magnus, Edward Magnuszewski, and sister Celia Raymer. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, February 18th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church 3655 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery where the Lorain American Legion Post #30, and V.F.W. Post #451 will conduct military honors. In lieu of flowers contributions in John's memory may be given to St. Peter Catholic Church Capital Improvement Fund or a charity of the donor's choice.
