John Joseph Szabo, 84, of Wakeman, died unexpectedly Sunday, August 1, 2010 surrounded by his loving family at Cleveland Clinic. Born April 8, 1926 in Czechoslovakia he had been a Wakeman resident for the past 39 years moving from Lorain. He served in the Merchant Marines and retired as a general foreman in the pipe mill at US Steel after 36 years. John was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Vermilion. He enjoyed gardening, travel and loved being with his family and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Madelene (nee Costello); daughter, Helen (Joe) Muska, Vermilion, Kathleen (Ernest) Ratliff , Vermilion, Madalyn (Emory) Anderson, Louisville, KY; grandchildren, Lori, Michael, Joey, Andy and John and great grandchildren, Casey, Corey and Andrew; sisters, Helen Szabo of Lorain and Elizabeth Frey of Charlotte Harbor, FL; and his brother, Bert Szabo of Avon. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen (nee Latran) Szabo. Friends may call Thursday, August 5, 2010 from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street Vermilion Ohio. Prayers will be said in the funeral home Friday, August 6, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion.
