John "Jack" Zakowski, 92, of Lorain, died Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain. Born May 25, 1918 in Verona, PA his family moved to Lorain when he was a young boy. He served in the US Army during WWII in Kodiak, AK and helped to build the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. Jack served the Lorain community by owning and operating three gas and car repair stations. His first was Jacks Sunoco which was located on the site of the current Lorain Library. He then moved to Oberlin Ave and Miester Rd and opened the Pure Oil Station which later changed to Jacks Union 76 Station. He served the area as a mechanic from 1946 to 1979. He was also Lorain County Special deputy Sheriff for many years. Jack was a volunteer for Lorain Community Health Partners, Lorain Follies, and International Lorain. Survivors include his daughters, Jacqueline J. Cooper of Spring Hill, FL and Charlene "Cherie" Swendsboe of Nashua, NH; 5 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandson who bears his name, Jack. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte "Chuckie" Zakowski in 2009; and parents, Bernard and Ezabela Zakowski Private inurnment will take place at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, OH.
