Jonathan Merle Houff, 97, of Vermilion, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at Kingston Residence of Vermilion after a 2 month illness. Born October 12, 1913 in Lorain he had been a Vermilion resident for the past 60 years. He was a veteran of the US Army serving during WWII. Jonathan worked as an inspector for the B&O Railroad for 30 years retiring in 1974. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermilion where he had been Vice President, Treasurer, and participated on the Stewardship committee. Jonathan enjoyed gardening, yard work, boating, and bowling. He was a devoted father and grandfather. He is survived by his son, Rev. Dr. Larry J. (Gundula) Houff of Vermilion; daughter, Bonnie (Dan) Pryor of Vermilion; grandchildren, Maudy Paden, Nicole Hamilton, Jessica Cady, Michael Houff, Stefan Houff, Binh Thai and Hoa Thai; 11 great grandchildren and a sister, Christine Grondin, St. Petersburg, FL. He was preceded in death by his wife, Suzette K. Houff (nee Bird); parents, Joseph and Christine (nee Arnold) Houff; sisters, Rachel Houff and Margarite Manwell; 4 brothers, Arnold, Gordon, Gerald, and Robert Houff. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 11, 2011 from 2-4 p.m. and 7:30 -9 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street Vermilion Ohio. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 3747 Liberty Ave., Vermilion. The Reverend Terry Parker will officiate.
