Joy Szabo

Joy Lou Szabo (née Thurman), 85, of Wakeman, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at her son’s home in Attica following a lengthy illness.

Born on January 3, 1941, in Spring City, Tennessee, Joy made her home in Wakeman for 46 years before moving to Attica to be with her son.

Joy was employed by Betcher Industries, but her greatest pride and life's work was caring for her family. She found her greatest happiness surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, creating lasting memories with those she loved most.

She enjoyed watching sports on television and loved an occasional trip to the casino, often reminiscing about visits to the riverboat casinos. Joy and her beloved husband, Butch, also enjoyed traveling together to Amish Country, where they shopped for Amish foods and treats-especially sweets, which Joy never turned down. More than anything, the simple comforts of home and time spent with family brought her the greatest joy.

She is survived by her sons, Bill Szabo of Wakeman and Mike (Laurie) Szabo of Attica; her daughter, Debbie Weglicki of Cleveland; her grandchildren, Brittney Maynard, Christopher Farley, Brecka Reilly, Brooke Szabo, Michael Szabo, Billy Szabo, and Emily Szabo; and her great-grandchildren, Blake Farley, Christopher Farley Jr, Isiah Moss, Cole Maynard, Archer Reilly, and Brynn Reilly.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William "Butch" Szabo, in 2019; her parents, Alva and Johnnie Mae (Roberts) Thurman; and her siblings, Frank, Donnie, Barb, Doug, Larry, and Michelle.

Private graveside services will be held at Florence Cemetery, 11319 SR 113 Berlin Heights, OH 44814 with Pastor Chuck Livermore officiating.
