Joyce Elsie Nickley(nee Zelinski), 86, of Vermilion, died Saturday, February 19, 2022 at New Life Hospice after a lengthy illness. She was born July 3, 1935 in Amherst, OH and had been a proud lifelong Vermilion resident. Joyce graduated from Vermilion high school. She received a bachelors degree from Kent State and her masters from Ashland University. Joyce worked for Vermilion Local Schools as a teacher for over 25 years, retiring in 1990 and was a volleyball coach. She loved God, her family, Lake Erie and Vermilion. She was a member of the Vermilion Evangelical and Reformed Church, where she was active in the choir. She was also a member of the Vermilion College Club, Bridge-o-rama, YMCA and First Ladies golf league. She enjoyed bicycling, GOBA, water and snow skiing, camping and swimming. She was an avid sports fan of the Indians, Cavs and Browns. She attended many of Vermilion's Third Thursdays and believed Vermilion was "a great place to drop anchor." She is survived by her daughter, Peggy (Dan) Tomcheck of Loveland, CO; son, Michael (Beth) Nickley of Medina, OH; grandchildren, Jessica and Jake (Ashlee) Tomcheck, William (Kayla) Nickley, Ben Nickley, Alex (Yanan) Nickley, Kate (Darian) and Kevin (Alyssa) Nickley, great-grandchildren, Arbor, Harriet, and Bruce Nickley. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Gene Nickley; parents, August and Elsie (nee Drechsler) Zelinski. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 23, 2022 from 5 to 8 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Funeral services will be Thursday, February 24, 2022 at 11 am at Vermilion Evangelical and Reformed Church, 752 Grand Street, Vermilion. The Reverend Nick Cacciatore will officiate. Interment will follow at Brownhelm Cemetery.
