June Marion Eppink

June Marion Eppink, 83, of Willoughby Hills, died Sunday, August 26, 2007 at Hillcrest Hospital, Mayfield Heights after a brief illness. She was born June 10, 1924 in Cleveland, had lived in Rochester, NY until 1946 when she returned to Cleveland. She graduated from Oberlin College as an English literature major. She was editor of Sohio News when she retired in 1985. She joined Sohio in 1946. The first issue of the newspaper appeared in 1947 with her on its staff. Miss Eppink won many awards for her contributions to Sohio's communications efforts. In 1980 she was named Editor-of-the-Year by the American Petroleum Institute. That same year she received a "Career Women of Achievement" merit award from the Cleveland YWCA. Honors also included a graphic arts award from the Printing Industries of America and an award of excellence from the International Association of Business Communicators. She was a repeat winner in the area Women in Communications Inc. competition. She devoted nearly 40 years to keeping employees of The Standard Oil Company informed about company and industry news. Miss Eppink belonged to The College Club of Cleveland, where she served as vice-president and trustee, and was a 57 year member of the Church of the Covenant. She was a world traveler, taking several trips a year, one of them Europe, and she was a teaching volunteer for John Carroll University Student Career Development. Survivors include her sister, Beverly Gairing of Lyndhurst; a niece, Ann Gairing Zarate of Powell, Ohio; a nephew, David Gairing of Suwanee, Georgia; grand nephews, Anthony Zarate, Nathan Gairing, and Michael Gairing; and grandniece, Melissa Zarate. Preceding her in death were her parents, Harold William and Marion (nee Ruggles) Eppink. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 29th at 1:00 PM at the Church of the Covenant, 11205 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland. The Rev. Jonyrma R. Singleton will officiate.
