Katie Wilkerson (nee Dempsey), 90, former resident of Vermilion, went home to be with the Lord on February 3, 2015, at Friendship Village in Dublin, OH after a lengthy illness. Katie was born April 12, 1924 in Selma, Alabama and had been a Vermilion resident for 40 years before moving to the Dublin area in 2000 to be near her son. Katie loved children and taught 4 and 5 year olds Sunday School at the First Baptist Church, Vermilion for 30 years. Katie also worked with exceptional children at the Lucy Idol School for 10 years. Katie loved and was loved by her friends in the J. O. Y. class at First Baptist Church. Katie will be remembered as someone with a great faith in God and who shared that faith with others. Katie is survived by her son, John (Jenifer) Wilkerson, Jr. of Dublin, OH; daughters, Kay (Al) Townsend of Mena, AR, Diane (Mark) Young of McCormick S. C. and Beverly Leak of Mason, OH; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, John P Wilkerson; parents, Elijah and Sally Dempsey; brothers, Comer and Woodrow Dempsey; sisters, Rosalee Dunavant, Willibee McCraw, Minnie Gray Wheeler and Dorothy "Tot" Bingham; and infant grandson Gregory Young. The family will receive friends on February 9, 2015 from 10:00 am until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 Noon at the First Baptist Church, 6716 West River Road, Vermilion OH. The Reverend Jerry Anderson will officiate. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church J. O. Y.
