Larry T. Dickerhoff (Captain Larry), 68 of Vermilion passed away peacefully with loving family and friends by his side at Admiral's Point on March 4, 2018 following a short battle with glioblastoma. He was born August 11, 1949 in Lorain to the late Ellsworth and Mabel (Grisel) Dickerhoff. Larry was a graduate of Vermilion High School. Upon graduation , he proudly served his country as a cook in the United States Navy from 1968-1972 aboard the U.S.S. Lexington. He has owned many businesses throughout his lifetime. His most well known was his restaurant "Captain Larry's," where on any given day, you could find him flipping burgers, cooking eggs or just sitting down for a chat with one of his many dear customers. Larry was a faithful and active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Vermilion where he served as a 4th Degree Knight for many years. Larry was a highly skilled businessman, devoted husband, loving father, never met a stranger, and was very passionate about putting our small little city on the map. He wanted all to see the immense beauty and potential Vermilion had. He served on the Main Street Vermilion Board for several years. He was a life long resident of Vermilion and loved every single moment of it. He is survived by the love of his life for 37 years, Debbie (McClain) Dickerhoff; his daughter, Shannon Dickerhoff of Las Vegas, NV; his son, Larry "Woody" (Lisa Anderson) Dickerhoff II of University Heights; his brother, Russ (Jan) Dickerhoff of Vermilion, brother and sister-in- laws, Terry and Rebecca McClain of Vermilion; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded by his parents, and his brother, David Dickerhoff. Larry fought hard to overcome his battle with cancer. In typical form, he gave it a 110%. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. Our hearts and our lives will be forever changed. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 8, 2018 from 3:00 pm until the time of a Knight Honor Service by St. Mary Knights of Columbus at 7:30 pm followed by Military Honors presented by the Vermilion Veterans Council at Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion. Prayers will be said at the funeral home on Friday, March 9, 2018 at 11:00 am followed by an 11:30 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion. Rev. Ron Brickner will officiate. Inurnment will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion at a later date.
