Larry O Hawkes

Larry O. Hawkes, 75, of Lorain, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at Mercy New Life Hospice, following a brief illness.

Larry was born on October 14, 1947, in Commerce, GA, and grew up in Lorain. He returned to Lorain 12 years ago.

He dedicated 30 years of his life to U.S. Steel and retired as an Internal Sales Rep. in 1996.

Larry's commitment extended beyond his professional life; he served as a volunteer fireman with the Vermilion Fire Department and also volunteered as an EMT. He was known for his philanthropic spirit as a long-time blood donor. Larry cherished the great outdoors and enjoyed activities such as boating, camping, biking, and snowmobiling. He was also a skilled woodworker and had a passion for stained glass artistry.

Larry is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Carol (nee Wise) Hawkes; his son, Michael (Tina) Hawkes of Medina, OH; and his grandsons, Ian and Evan Hawkes. He is also survived by his sisters, Diane (Carl) Cunningham of Sheffield Twp. and Paulette Kerpics of Oberlin, along with several nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his daughter, Michele Hawkes, in 1991; his father, Jonah Rudolph Hawkes; his mother, Dorothy Jeanette (nee Langston) Hawks; his brother, William Hawkes; his sister, Sandy Stavesky; and his nephew, Bobby Hawkes.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects on Friday, October 13, 2023, from 3:00 pm until the time of a memorial service at 7:00 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, located at 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
