Larry Elton Stumpp, 75, of Amherst, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain after a 2 year struggle with melanoma. He was born November 4, 1933 in Brownhelm Township, was raised in Vermilion and lived in Amherst for 50 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving between 1954 and 1956. Larry was a graduate of Vermilion High School and worked as a Project Manager for T.O. Murphy, Oberlin and Bay Mechanical, Lorain retiring in 1997. He was a member of St. Peters United Church of Christ in Amherst. He enjoyed following NASCAR, restoring cars, gardening, and wood working, especially building Intarsia and Burl Clocks that he sold in the Wellington and Birmingham craft shows. He also especially enjoyed his winter home and friends in Arizona. Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Dottie (nee Myers) Matcham Stumpp; sons, Jared (Mary) Stumpp of Vermilion and Jeffrey (Patti) Stumpp of Amherst; 3 granddaughters, Emily, Katie and Lindsey Stumpp; Dottie's 3 children and their families and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his 1st wife, Susan C. Stumpp in 1991; his parents, George and Mildred (nee Sanders) Stumpp; his brothers, Floyd Herchler, Elmer Herchler, Curtis Herchler, Clarence Herchler and Edward Herchler; and sisters, Katherine Carrier, Cora Drotleff, Caroline Rose, Ruth Schneider and Eleanor Herchler. Friends may call Thursday, June 18, 2009 from 5-8 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion. Friends may also call from 10 am until the time of the funeral service at 11 am on Friday, June 19, 2009 at the Riddle Funeral Home. The Pastor Dan Reinke, from the Old Stone United Methodist Church Amherst, will officiate. Burial will follow at Peaks Cemetery, Berlin Heights where the Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military honors. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society Ohio Division Inc., 10501 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44106 or New Life Hospice, 5255 North Abbe Road, Elyria, Ohio 44035-1450.
