Leroy Johnson Koachway, age 68, of Berlin Heights, died Friday, October 1, 2004 in Community Health Partners West following a brief illness. He was born on July 22, 1936 in Amherst and has lived in Berlin Heights for the past 4 years, moving from Vermilion. He enjoyed golfing and was the secretary of the Vermilion Golf League for 20 years. He was a member of AMVETS Post 22 and the American Legion Post 397, both in Vermilion. He enjoyed playing cards and was a member of the Vermilion Poker Club. He was an active participant in the Vermilion Operation Christmas Joy for over 20 years. He also enjoyed woodworking and buiding bird houses and watching western movies. Survivors include his companion of 16 years, Ellen Vandermaelen of Berlin Heights; sisters, Ellen O'Hara of Vermilion and Carolyn Hill of Richland, MI; brother, Karl Koachway of Vermilion; 4 nieces, 2 nephews, 1 grandniece and 1 grandnephew. Preceding him in death were his parents, Allan and Bernice (nee Fischer) Koachway. A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm on Sunday, October 3, 2004, at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion. Matthew Humphrey will be the funeral celebrant.
