Luther Sylvester Marquart, 99, formerly of Vermilion and currently a resident of the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky, died Friday, September 11, 2015 at Firelands Regional Medical Center South Campus. Luther was born June 22, 1916 in Eagle Twp., OH. He moved to Vermilion in 1942 until moving to Lorain in 1951. He moved back to Vermilion in 1979. . He was a United States Navy veteran serving during WWII. Luther worked for American Ship, Becker Machine, and 25 years for Lorain Products. After retirement he worked part time at Vermilion Hardware, and volunteered at Mercy Regional Medical Center and Kingston of Vermilion. He was a member of St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church. He also was a member of the AMVETS Post #22, and the Lutheran Layman's League . He enjoyed mechanical work, metal work, welding, and woodworking. Luther served on the Friends of Harbourtown Board of Directors, and was very involved with the Port Authority in the development of the canoe and kayak ramp on the Vermilion River. On August 25, 1939 he married Thelma (nee Winkler). She preceded him in death November 2, 2008. He is survived by daughters, Phyllis Jean Marquart of New Orleans, LA, , Patricia Ann Libbey of Philadelphia, PA and Kathryn Louise Weber of Lake Forest, CA; granddaughter, Katherine Wertz of Philadelphia, PA, and great granddaughter, Mia Wertz. Along with his wife he was preceded in death by his parents Philp and Lillian (nee Essinger) Marquart and brother Paul E. Marquart. The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 17th from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. with Vermilion Veterans Council Honors at Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South St., Vermilion OH. The Reverend Dr. Karl Fry will officiate. Interment services will be private. The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Matthews Lutheran Church P.O. Box 774, Vermilion, OH.
