Malcolm "Jay" Mackey, 68, of Vermilion, died suddenly Friday, January 18, 2013 at Mercy Regional Medical Center, Lorain, Ohio. Jay was born September 20, 1944 in Logansport, IN and had been a Vermilion and Sandusky area resident since 1966. Jay was a graduate of Fremont Ross High School where he was an academic football All-American. He served in the Army from 1963 to 1965 and was All-Army football. Jay attended Purdue University (home of Mackey Arena) and graduated from Bowling Green State University with a B.S., and a Masters Degree in education. From 1966 to 1972 he was an Ohio State Highway Patrolman. From 1972 to 1996 he was a teacher with Sandusky Public Schools as a social studies teacher, and a drivers education instructor. While there, Jay developed a modern 4 phase drivers education program. In the late 80's and early 90's he ran continuous projects for the Ohio Department of Public Safety for which he won the Felty Award, the first educator to do so. Jay enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening, and was a member of the Perseverance #329 F.&A.M. in Sandusky. On January 11, 1967 he married his wife of 46 years Carolee (nee Williams) and she survives. Also surviving are brothers Robert (Linda) Mackey of Whitehouse, OH, and Lew (Shirley) Mackey of Winona Lake, IN; sister Barbara Adams of Loogootee, IN; brother-in-law Robert (Sandy) Williams of Cincinnati; 7 nieces; 5 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Malcolm Glass and Ellen Jane (Jones) Mackey. The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 22nd from 4-7 P.M. at the Riddle Funeral Home 5345 South St., Vermilion, OH where Masonic services will be conducted at 6:45 P.M., followed by a time of sharing.
