Marjorie Anne Dean (nee Sokol), 95, of Vermilion, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at her daughter’s home following a lengthy illness.
She was born August 12, 1930, in Lorain, Ohio, and had been a longtime resident of Vermilion.
Marjorie worked for Cavalier China Shop and Spiegelberg’s Orchard and, for a time, proudly operated the Liberty Theatre. She was a dedicated and hardworking woman who was tenacious, stubborn, and headstrong — all in the very best ways.
To say Marjorie was an avid baker, crafter, and gardener would be an understatement. There truly wasn’t anything she couldn’t do. She will be lovingly remembered for her wonderful cooking and baking, especially the pies and cupcakes she made for family gatherings and holidays that became treasured traditions. Marjorie also enjoyed sewing, faithfully making clothing for her children when they were in school, as well as knitting and crocheting dishcloths and decorations. She also had a green thumb, caring for flowers, plants, and many bluebirds and hummingbirds.
She is survived by her children, David Maslanka (Carol), James Maslanka, Sally (Timothy) O'Neal, Mark (Debbie) Dean, and James Dean; many cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and siblings, Ellen Johnson, Doris Hall, and David Hambley.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, James F. “Tot” Dean, whom she is now reunited with once again; children, Matthew Dean and Toni Deel; daughter-in-law, Ina Maslanka; sister, Rosemary Schaffer; and brother, Richard Hambley.
Private graveside services will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.
