Mary C. Ostrander (nee McCarthy), 95, of Vermilion, died peacefully Monday, Nov. 25, 2013 at Anchor Lodge Nursing Home, Lorain. She was born December 3, 1917 in Collingswood, NJ. Mary lived in Vermilion from 1962 to 1968, moved to Grosse Ile, MI for several years and moved back to Vermilion in 1974. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. Mary was employed as a civilian by the U.S. Navy during WWII, working for Inspection Services in their Landing Craft area. In 1948 she married her husband, Richard Ostrander, and retired to raise her family. She was devoted to her family, loved boating on the Great Lakes aboard the Sea Six and taking many trips to the Jersey shore. She will always be remembered for her quick wit and ability to keep those around her laughing. Mary spent many years with the "birthday club" girls and enjoyed all of their good times together. She loved the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Indians and always looked forward to the beginning of the baseball season each spring. Mary is survived by her sons, Fred (Nancy) Ostrander of Vermilion and Richard Ostrander of Hingham, MA; daughters Joanne (Don) Remenapp of Mansfield, TX, Nancy (Dick) Disbrow of Vermilion, Denise (Mark) Studt of Noblesville, IN, and Linda Ostrander of Put-in-Bay; grandchildren, Mary Katherine (Matt) Kelm, Jonathan (Michelle) Ostrander, Richie Ostrander (mother, Gail Ostrander) and Eric Studt; and great grandchildren, Jude Kelm and Mary Clare Ostrander. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard V. Ostrander; parents John J. and Theresa (nee Reilley) McCarthy; brothers, Harold, Ed, George and John; and sisters, Mid McCarthy and Dot Williford. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013 from noon until the time of closing prayers at 2:30 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, OH. at 2:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion will follow at 3 p.m. Father Ron Brickner will officiate. Interment will be at Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island, NY, Friday, Nov. 29, 2013 at 2: 30 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Mary's Church, 732 Exchange Street, Vermilion, OH 44089 or to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.
