Matthew Thomas Moes

Matthew Thomas Moes, 35, of Vermilion, died Friday, February 5, 2016. He was born February 18, 1980 in Cleveland, OH and had recently moved back to Vermilion. Matthew graduated from the Landing School of Boat Building and Design, Kennebunkport, Maine with a certificate in boat design. He then received a Mechanical Engineering degree from The Ohio State University. After graduating from Ohio State he joined the Navy and trained to become a Navy Seal. He left Navy Seal training to receive his Masters degree in Advanced Mathematics from Portland State University, Oregon. Matthew worked at his family's boat yard, Moes Marine, and had done boat design work on the east and west coasts. He always had a current issue of the "Economist" close at hand and challenged his mind by immersing himself in the great works of classical literature, Ulysses being his favorite. However his passion was mathematical problem solving. He is survived by his parents, Thomas and Carolyn (nee Hayes) Moes; brothers, Michael (Maura) Moes of Vermilion and Geoffrey (Sarah) Moes of Rossford; and nephews, Owen and Will. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Julius "Mike" and June Moes and maternal grandparents, George and Penny Hayes. Private services will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Lighthouse Preservation Committee towards the purchase of the Fresnel Lens: "Keep our Light Shining".
