Maxine "Schetter" Schmitz (nee Hayes), 100, of Vermilion, went to be with her Savior Friday, July 8, 2016 at Mill Manor Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. Maxine was born May 4, 1916 in Owosso, MI. She moved to Vermilion in 1929. She was a graduate of Vermilion High School Class of 1934 and had worked at Englebry Department Store in Vermilion as a clerk. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Vermilion, where she was a Eucharistic Minister, member of the Altar Rosary Society and the Bible Study Group. She also sang in the choir and was a regular nursing home visitor. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, playing cards, ball room dancing, raising her large family, and being a homemaker. She is survived by her sons, Paul (Diana) Schmitz of Vermilion, Theodore (Kay) Schmitz of Alabama, and Michael (Linda) Schmitz of Berlin Heights; daughters, Marilyn (Joe) Koepfer of Lancaster, KY, Patricia (Terry) Fitzgerald of Temperance, MI, Mary Ann (Jerry) Riffe of Dayton, Susan (David) Spurgeon of Dayton, and Jean (Mitch) Mankin of Somerset, KY; daughter in law, Linda Schmitz of Springfield; 37 grandchildren and 83 great grandchildren; and 17 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Arthur Schmitz, parents, Ernest and Ella (nee Turner) Hayes; 1st husband, Arthur Schmitz in 1976, 2nd husband, Ralph Schetter in 1982; brothers, Harry and Ross Hayes, and her sister, Evelyn "Nuggie" Cook. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Prayers and family memories will be shared at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at 10:15 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion, Ohio. The Reverend Ron Brickner will officiate. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.
