Melanie Stainbrook (nee Gasdick) of Vermilion, age 46, passed away on September 1, 2017 after fighting a long battle with cancer. She was born April 6, 1971 in Amherst, OH and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 25 years. Melanie was a beloved 2nd grade teacher at Vermilion Elementary School with a lifelong passion for learning, teaching and helping others. Her impact will be long remembered by students, their families and her colleagues. An athlete herself, Melanie enjoyed coaching varsity softball for several years at Vermilion High School. To her family and friends Melanie embodied endless warmth, positivity, strength, and most of all, happiness. Her sense of humor and quick whit were just two of her many qualities. Melanie loved gardening, photography, camping, and her family dogs. Melanie is survived by her husband Paul of 25 years, their daughter Leigh Stainbrook at home, her parents Norman and Connie Gasdick (nee Papenbrock), brother Michael Gasdick (Lynn), father-in-law and mother-in-law Paul and Joanne Stainbrook (nee Hocker), many sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, and nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017 from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street., Vermilion, OH 44089. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers and with Melanie's wishes to support local children, donations may be made to the Vermilion Salvation Army, Attn: Janet Ancog, 4560 Liberty Ave., Vermilion, OH 44089.
