Merik Austin Bendig

Merik Austin Bendig, 20, of Vermilion, passed away Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at MetroHealth Medical Center as the result of a tragic accident.

He was born May 9, 2005, in Middleburg Heights and was a lifelong resident of Vermilion.

Merik was known for his big heart, generous spirit, and his love for helping others. From a young age, he had a passion for bicycles and mopeds-often spending hours repairing them with his father. When in high school, he started a bike repair class at Vermilion High, where his talent and compassion for people came together. Merik would often fix up bikes and gift them to children who didn’t have one, finding joy in others' smiles.

Those who knew Merik will remember his bright soul, contagious energy, and the kindness he shared so freely. He was his mother’s ray of sunshine and a friend to everyone he met. He also loved spending time with the family iguana, Bill, who brought him endless joy and laughter.

He is survived by his loving parents, Marc Bendig and Marlena Gavel, both of Vermilion; his brother and side kick, Meighler Anthony Bendig of Vermilion; his soul mate, Audra Klempay; maternal grandparents, William and Mary Jo Gavel; aunts and uncles, Bill Gavel, Melissa Gavel, Andrew Gavel, Benjamin Gavel, Michael Bendig, Michele Bendig-Brown, and Mary Foley; many cousins including, Jeremy Brown; and countless friends including John and Antonio DelMonico and Austin Hamilton-Kroesen.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Bill and Patricia A. Bendig, and his uncle, Anthony Lewis Gavel.

A celebration of Merik’s life will be held Friday, October 24, 2025 from 3:00 p.m. until the time of a memorial service at 4:00 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, OH 44089.

In honor of Merik’s giving heart, memorial contributions may be made to his GoFundMe, where funds will be used to help the family and purchase bicycles for children in need within the Vermilion community-a lasting tribute to his love for helping others.
