Richard Bert Decker, 70, of Vermilion, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at Cleveland Clinic Foundation, surrounded by his family following a sudden illness.
He was born August 7, 1955, in Cleveland, Ohio, and was a lifelong resident of the Vermilion area.
Richard built a respected career as a mechanical design engineer, working for Bettcher Industries and Ridgid Tool before becoming co-owner of Latanick Equipment. He proudly operated the business for 15 years until his retirement in 2016. Beyond his work, Richard will be remembered throughout the community for his kindness and generosity. He was the kind of person who was always willing to lend a hand, share his knowledge, and help others, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Cynthia (nee Doyle) Decker; his daughters, Jessica (Kendrick Thompson) Decker of Savannah, Georgia, and Jennifer (Branden) Clark of Amherst; his beloved grandchildren, Emma, Haylee, and Hannah; his brother, Gary (Beverly) Decker of Brunswick, Georgia; his brother-in-law, Earl (Julie) Doyle; his sister-in-law, Kathy (Ron) Baker; and many nieces and nephews, including Erin Root, Rich Decker, Masin (Madison) Decker, Ellynn (Chris) O'Rourke, Justin (Dee) Carroll, Austin (Taylor Burger) Haines, Kristen Baker, Aaron Baker, Madeline Doyle, Joe Doyle, and Ian Doyle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Ethelyn (nee Perkins) Decker, and his sister-in-law, Debbie Haines.
A skilled craftsman, Richard found great joy in woodworking, especially restoring Lyman boats, as well as golfing and boating. Above all, he cherished time with his family, particularly his grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and happiness.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be announced at a later date.
