Richard G. Scheid, 89, passed away December 11, 2011 at his daughter's home after a brief illness. Born in Pontiac, OH September 17, 1922 he attended a one room school on Rt. 99 S. in Pontiac for the first 8 grades. He graduated from Monroeville High School in 1940. He applied at Lincoln Electric Welding School, Cleveland but was placed on a waiting list. He then went to work at Atlas Powder Co. in Ravenna, OH. Six months later he was called to Lincoln Welding School where he graduated with high honors. He worked for a fabricating company in the flats of Cleveland, then the Lorain Shipyard until W.W.II when he enlisted in the Merchant Marines, taking his training in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY. He was sent to California and shipped out on a T2 tanker in the South Pacific till he arrived in San Francisco Bay. He then purchased a 1945 Indian Deluxe Motorcycle and rode it to Ohio on old Route 66. He then shipped out from New York on tankers hauling oil from Texas City to Savannah, GA, to Maine. He quit in 1974 and hired in at Fruehauf Trailer Co. in Avon Lake when the contractors were still pouring the cement floors. Richard worked as a Class A Welder working his way up to jig & fixture, then tool & die dept., and then maintenance foreman for 3 years when the plant closed. During that time he was treasurer of their Local 925 Industrial Workers A.F.L. for several years. He was also treasurer of the Fruehauf Employer Credit Union. He then went to work for General Motors at Lordstown as a millwright. In 1973 he was hired in at Ford Ohio Assembly Plant as one of the early millwrights, working there 13 years retiring in 1986. He was a member U.A.W. Local 2000, member at the United Polish Club- PACC-PLAV in Lorain. In 1954 he met his wife Martha at a dance and married her in September 1955, and had two daughters. He was baptized, confirmed, and a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Pontiac, OH. He enjoyed spending time with his wife in DeFuniak Springs, FL, camping, and traveling to all continental states plus Canada, and Mexico. They were former members of The Black River Trail Blazers, the Travelers and R.V.er's Club, the American R.V. Club, the Coast to Coast R.V. Club, and the Holly King Lakes R.V. Club He enjoyed gardening and was a big time photographer. He is survived by his daughter Marcia Scheid-Fuller (Howard) of Vermilion. He was preceded in death by his wife Martha in January 2004, daughter Marie in September 1968, mother Hattie in December 1960, father William in November 1959, brothers Earl in February 1913, Orlo in June 1980, Leland in February 2000, and Merlin in November 2002. Richard deeply appreciated his aide Doris, and nurses Charlene, Sue, and Julie from Intrepid Home Health Care. Also his nurse Lilly, and aide Amanda from New Life Hospice. A special thank you to all of them from Marcia and Howard. Funeral services will be held 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, December 14th with the family receiving friends from 1:00 P.M.until service time at Dombrowski-Riddle Funeral Home & Cremation Service 1939 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. Pastor Jimmy Madsen of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lorain will officiate. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery with military honors conducted by American Legion Post #30 and V.F.W. Post # 451. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Animal Protective League of Lorain County 7202 Murray Ridge Rd., Elyria, OH 44035.
