Robert John “Bob” Bakos, 77, of Vermilion, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2026 at Admiral’s Pointe Nursing Home following a lengthy illness due to complications with Agent Orange exposure during Vietnam.
He was born July 22, 1948 in Lorain, Ohio, and graduated from Admiral King High School in 1966. Bob spent the last 32 years in Vermilion after moving from Sheffield Village, where he built a life centered around family, hard work, faith, and the simple joys that brought him happiness.
Bob was a proud veteran of the United States Army who served during the Vietnam War with the Army Aviation Cavalry. He dedicated 30 years of service to US Steel, working as a Journeyman until his retirement in 2001. He was known for his strong work ethic, mechanical skill, and willingness to lend a hand whenever needed. Those who knew Bob appreciated his quiet strength, dependable nature, and the pride he took in everything he did.
A faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermilion, Bob found joy in life’s everyday moments. He had a lifelong love for classic cars, especially Chevrolet Corvettes, and could often be found working on cars, or spending time outdoors. Whether chopping wood, enjoying nature, or sharing stories with family and friends, Bob was happiest when keeping busy and doing what he loved.
Above all, Bob treasured the time he spent with his family. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 48 years, Sandy (nee Smith) Bakos of Vermilion; daughter, Kristen Prieto of Vermilion; son, Michael (Kelly) Bakos of Akron; grandchildren, Miranda Eaton, Marissa Prieto, and Ash Prieto; and his brother, Richard (Sheryl) Bakos of Elyria.
