Robert "Lee" Hammond, Jr., 51, of Amherst, died suddenly Sunday, May 13, 2007 in Athens County, Ohio. He was born January 30, 1956 in Spartanburg, SC. He has been an Amherst resident for the past 3 years moving from Knoxville, TN. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served during Desert Shield/Desert Storm, receiving a bronze star for the 1st ever retrieval of a downed air craft behind enemy lines. He worked as the Logistics Manager of KTM Sports Motorcycle for the past 3 years. He previously had worked for Federal Mogul in Sevierville, TN and for Highland Contract Services. He graduated with BA in Political Science and MBA in Logistics from the University of Tennessee. He was a member of the Baileyton Missionary Baptist Church, Baileyton, TN. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, hiking, kayaking, the outdoors, his children and his Labrador retrievers. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Mischell (nee Shirley); daughter, Meghan Hammond of Cedar Knolls, NJ; 2 sons, Sgt. Chantry Tyrell (Christy) Hammond serving in the US Army in Iraq and Robert Lee "Trey" Hammond III of Lawton, OK; 1 granddaughter Emileigh Brook Hammond; his mother, Edna Earl (nee Foster) Hammonds of Spartanburg, SC and his brother, George David Hammond of Greenville, TN. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee Hammond, Sr. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 17, 2007 from 1-4 and 7-9 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion. A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 18, 2007 at 2 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, with the Reverend Kristi Foster, United Church of Christ Congregational. Family will receive friends in South Carolina on Sunday, May 20, 2007 from 12:30 - 2:30 pm at the Greenlawn Memorial Garden Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307 followed by a graveside service at 3 pm at Greenlawn Memorial Garden, Spartanburg, SC. Memorial contributions may be made to University of Tennessee, c/o Lee Hammond Memorial Fund, 721 Stokley Management Center, Knoxville, TN 37996. The family requests that you wear your orange.
