Robert B. Liljegren

April 7, 1919 — August 8, 2005

Robert Berger Liljegren, 86 of Vermilion, died Monday, August 8, 2005 in New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain. He was born April 7, 1919 in Sioux City, Iowa and had lived in Vermilion since 1950 moving from Gary, Indiana. He attended the University of Minnesota. He was a veteran of the U.S Army Corp of Engineers and served in Europe during WW II as a First Lieutenant. He was a partner in Stevenson & Fisher Co. and worked as a Manufacturer's Representative for lighting and lighting fixture materials. He was a member of the Vermilion United Church of Christ Congregational. He was a 50 year member of Ely Lodge Post #424 where he was a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner. He was a 51 year charter member of Vermilion Lions Club and received the Melvin Jones Award for humanitarianism. He was a 53 year member of the VFW Post #7576. He served on the Vermilion Board of Public Affairs, Vermilion City Council and was Vermilion City Council President serving from 1957 - 1963. He also served on the Civil Service Commission, Planning Commission and the Charter Review Committee. In 1963 he was recognized as the distinguished Man of the Year by the Vermilion Jaycees. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Hilda Margaret (nee Creel) Liljegren; sons, David Liljegren and James Liljegren of Vermilion; 2 grandchildren; sister, Betty Root-Gaut of Lincoln, CA. Preceding him in death were his parents, Maximilian Berger and Gertrude Sophia (nee Berg) Liljegren, and a sister Louise Meyette. A memorial service will be held at the Riddle Funeral Home, Friday, August 12, 2005 at 11 a.m. The Vermilion Veterans Council will provide military services and Ely Lodge #424 will conduct a Masonic Service.
