Robert E. "Bob" Mey, Sr., 83, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at his daughter and son-in-law's residence in Vermilion following an extended illness.
Born on February 17, 1940, in Parma, Ohio, Bob had been a cherished resident of Vermilion for 78 years, moving from Berea. He was a proud graduate of Vermilion High School class of 1958, where he played football, basketball, ran track, and was a member of the National Honor Society.
Bob commenced his professional journey at Wakefield Lighting in Vermilion before dedicating 25 years of service as an Electrician at Ford Motor Co., Lorain, retiring in 1997. Alongside, he contributed significantly to the construction and remodeling industry, crafting homes and establishing component shops.
He was a devoted and founding member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermilion. He was also a long time member of the Vermilion Lions Club where he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship and founded the Vermilion Leo Club. Bob found joy in exploring the country in his motorhome (visiting 36 states including the Redwood Forest in California) and crafting beautiful stained glass that is featured in the church's narthex and that he also shared with family and friends. He also enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels and cheering for the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, and Ohio State. Dressing as Santa's helper and Leo the Lion for parades and special events brought him joy. He will be remembered for the examples he set, high standards he lived by and the generosity he shared with family and friends.
He was not spoiled, he was well loved by his beloved wife, Patricia (nee Rogers) Mey, of 65 years, residing in Vermilion, OH. He is also well loved by his children, Mark Mey of Broken Arrow, OK, Pamela (Del) Sergent of Vermilion, Jeffrey (Lynn) Mey of Maryland, and Jennifer (Kevin) Smith of Vermilion, 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. Bob is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Lori Mey, brother, Ernest Mey, sister, Barbara (Ed) Smith, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Martha Mey (nee Kellat), son, Robert Mey, brothers Walter, Edward, and John Jr. Mey, sisters Helen Newkirk, Emma Griggs, Alice Herman and Pauline Holtcamp, and his daughter-in-law, Connie Mey.
The family will be receiving friends on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. There will be a Lions Club service at 3:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 8, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 3747 Liberty Ave., Vermilion, OH, followed by interment at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Trinity Lutheran Church, 3747 Liberty Avenue, P.O. Box 2, Vermilion, OH 44089 or the Vermilion Lions Club.
