Rosella "Red" L. Vargo (formerly Spoerr), aged 91, passed away on Monday, October 30, 2023, at Amherst Manor Retirement Community after a prolonged illness. She was born on April 21, 1932, in Berlin Heights, Ohio, and had been a beloved resident of Vermilion for the past six decades, having relocated from Berlin Heights.
Red grew up on the family farm in Florence, OH and graduated from Birmingham High School in the class of 1950 where she was active in Events and Programs and was the basketball score keeper for the Birmingham Rockets. She dedicated 28 years of her life to Harrison Manufacturing before retiring in 1995. She was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Parish in Vermilion and also devoted her time to the Amvets Auxiliary Post #22, contributing significantly to the planning and preparation of funeral luncheons and fish Fries. Additionally, she helped her husband, John with the Vermilion Veterans Council organizing Military Honors. She was a dedicated member of the VFW Auxiliary Post #7576 and the American Legion Auxiliary Post #397. Red found joy in tole painting, a hobby she cherished.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, John S. (Beverly) Vargo, Jr., of Vermilion; her daughter, Jean Young, of Lorain; grandchildren; Joshua (Bree) Vargo, Jacob (Rachel) Vargo, Chelsea (Will) Young, and Grant (Heidi) Young; great grandchildren, Ariana, Gabriella, Kaysen, Jayden, Riley, Joshua Jr. and Marcy Rose; and many nieces and nephews.
Red was preceded in death by her husband, John Steve Vargo, Sr whom she met at a street dance in Vermilion; her parents, Albert and Ruth Spoerr (nee Ackerman); her sister, Jean Sennhenn; and her brothers, Fred and Charles Spoerr.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects on Sunday, November 5, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, located at 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Prayers will be said at the funeral home on Monday, November 6, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Parish, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion, OH 44089. Interment will follow at Saint Joseph Cemetery, Amherst.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Amvets Auxiliary Post #22.
