Salvatore "Sam" J. Barbato, 81, of Vermilion, died Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph after a lengthy illness. Sam was born October 20, 1931 in Cleveland. He had been a Vermilion resident since 1968 and had lived in Redlands and Huntington Beach, California. He was part owner of Furniture Land, Elyria and North Ridgeville, and had worked for Prudential Insurance and Western Southern Life Insurance Companies both of Elyria. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Vermilion and enjoyed traveling. His joy was his family. He is survived by his wife, Johanna Barbato (nee Januszewski) of Vermilion; daughter, Cheryl (George) Rettinger of Littleton, CO and daughter-in- law, Tammy Barbato of Vermilion; 4 grandchildren, Erich Rettinger, Denver, CO, Stewart Rettinger, Centennial, CO, Lauren Barbato, Mulberry, FL and Robert Derek Barbato, Columbus; sisters, Lucille Narducci, Rosemary DiSiena, Joan Mullins, Cecile Guinto and Sandra Cardinal and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Salvatore and Antionette (nee Lococo) Barbato; sons, Robert Dale Barbato and Joseph Michael Barbato; brother, John Barbato and sister, Antionette Lerchbacher. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 23, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Prayers will be said at the funeral home Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 781 Exchange Street, Vermilion.
