Timothy S. Masten

Timothy Masten, 70 of Vermilion, died Thursday, December 27, 2007 at his home. He was born May 22, 1937, in Lorain and had been a Vermilion resident since 2002. He was a graduate of Wittenberg University. He was a music teacher at Elyria Public Schools retiring in 1990. He had also taught at Southeastern High School, South Charleston, Ohio and Pitchen Elemetery School, Springfield. He directed the Elyria High School Choirs and the Elyria High School Musicals during his career. He sang in the St. John's Cathedral Choir, Cleveland and at St. Marys Church in Vermilion. He co-founded the Springfield Civic Opera Co. He was a member of the Lorain County Arts Council and a previous member of the Lorain Kiwanis. He was an excellent musician and sang professionally. He was a gourmet cook and more recently he worked as a prep chef at Tom's County Place, Avon. He also enjoyed his job as First Mate on the Charter Boat "Miss Majestic", Lorain. Survivors include his daughter, Tammi Sanders, South Charleston, Ohio; 1 granddaughter, Kara Nicole Sanders; former wife, Tonja Graves; a brother, Dale Masten, Vermilion; a sister, Ann Henriksen, Holland, MI; and nieces, nephews and an aunt. Preceding him in death were his parents, Ralph and Catherine (nee Mahla) Masten. Friends may call Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion. A Christian Wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Prayers will be said Monday at 10:45 a.m. at the gathering space at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. The Reverend Jim Holmer, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
