Walter "Tom" Knitter, 69 of Lorain, died Sunday, October 18, 2009 at his home following a several month long illness. He was born September 1, 1940 in Lorain and had been a lifelong resident. Tom served in the US Navy aboard the USS Casa Grande. Once out of the service, he returned to Lorain and worked for a short time at the American Shipyards. Tom has since worked the past 39 years as a millwright at the Ford Motor Company Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon and at the former Lorain assembly plant. Tom was a member of St. Mary Church in Lorain, a life member of AMVETS Post #47 and UPC, member and past president of PLAV Post #38, and a founding member of the Bachelor's Club. He enjoyed working in his workshop, cookies and candy. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Barbara J. (nee Rangel) Knitter of Lorain; daughter, Mindy (Jim) Kupcik of Medina; sons, Tom (Danee) Knitter of Medina, Dave Knitter of Elyria and Steve Knitter of Lorain; 5 grandchildren, TJ, Adam, Devyn, Ryan and Jenna. He was preceded-in-death by his parents, Walter F. and Marion (nee Gerron) Knitter. Friends may call Wednesday, October 21, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Dombrowski-Humphrey-Riddle Funeral Home, 1939 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain, Ohio. Closing prayers will be said on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 9:30 am followed by a Mass of Chrisitian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Mary Church, 310 W. 8th Street, Lorain. Rev. Daniel O. Divis, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
