Dr. William H. Decker, 85, of Vermilion, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at Mercy Regional Medical Center.
Born on August 9, 1939, in Akron, Ohio, Bill had called Vermilion home for the past 50 years. He dedicated more than three decades to educating young minds as a chemistry teacher at Vermilion High School.
A man of deep faith and a love for music, Bill was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church in Vermilion, where he sang in the choir. He also enjoyed performing with the LCCC Civic Chorale. Bill was a dedicated community servant, volunteering with the Vermilion Lions Club for many years. He also played an active role in mentoring youth through the Vermilion Leo Club, encouraging leadership, service, and civic engagement among the next generation. In his free time, he loved traveling, being outdoors, fishing, and golfing. In his younger years, he was a gifted athlete, excelling in both baseball and basketball.
Bill is survived by his brothers, Robert "Bob" (Diana) Decker of North Canton, Ohio, and James (Diane) Decker of Tennessee, as well as two nephews and two nieces.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 36 years, Laura Jane Decker, in July 2024, and by his parents, Ellsworth Samuel and Hazel Mae (née Lamm) Decker.
Friends may call Saturday, June 21, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of a memorial service at 12 Noon at Grace United Methodist Church, Coen and West Lake Roads, Vermilion, OH 44089.
