William Albert Grote

January 11, 1953 — October 2, 2023

William A. "Bill" Grote, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, son, friend, and brother.  Bill peacefully departed this world on Monday, October 2, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his cherished family, after a brief illness. He was 70 years old.

Bill was born on January 11, 1953, right here in Vermilion. He, his wife, and his children lived in Lorain for many years boating and enjoying the lake life. They moved to New London, Ohio in 1990. After this move Bill became one of the most vocal, and loyal Wildcat sports fans. He enjoyed attending athletic events for his family and supporting them in all of their endeavors. Bill, aka; Liz’s Dad, Ronnie’s Grandpa, Parker’s Grandpa or Grandpa Bill, was always there for a loud cheer and congratulatory hug, no matter the outcome of the contest.

For three decades, Bill contributed his skills, expertise and lightheartedness to Ford Motor Co., Lorain, retiring from the maintenance department in 2001. His ability to bring fun and laughter, and a bit of mischievousness to “the line” left a lasting legacy among his colleagues and friends. “Wild Bill” was a name he earned honestly.

After retirement Bill and Joan purchased the New London Laundrymat. They became the familiar faces people saw each time they entered the establishment. Bill was always working on one machine or another, offering someone a cup of coffee or conversation, playing music, or helping the kiddos that came in with their math homework.

A few years ago, the lake once again called to him. Bill purchased another boat and he and Joan returned to where it all started, Vermilion. This return brought him closer to the water, friends, his eldest granddaughter and great grandchildren. It was here that he was able to renew his joy of the lake and boating. He would go to the docks every morning to have his morning coffee and watch the water. He was home.

Bill was a man of many passions. He had a zeal for life and was always on the go doing something. He found solace and joy on the open waters while boating, creating cherished memories with his family and friends. His greatest joys in life were his grandchildren, and his beloved dogs, who were loyal companions through thick and thin. Bill had a unique talent for tinkering and fixing anything that was mechanically broken, a skill that endeared him to all who sought his assistance. He also had a knack for Grandpa Jokes, popping-in or calling simply to say “Hi” and then leaving. Bill always had a smile and a wave for everyone. He brought joy and laughter to all who knew him.

Bill was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served his country during the Vietnam War. His dedication to duty was a testament to his character.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Joan Grote. He is also survived by his daughters, Angela Randle of Lyon, France, Bobbie Jo Funk of Fairview Park, and Elizabeth (Rick) Healy of New London; his cherished grandchildren, Cauletta, Morgan, Ryan, Ronnie, Katie, and Parker; great-grandchildren Kathryn, Alexandrea, and Tony; as well as his brothers, Mike Grote and Donald Grote. Bill's enduring legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, who will forever hold him dear.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Eva (nee Albert) Grote.

In accordance with Bill's wishes, private family services were held. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) at P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
